Sewell, Sánchez on New GAO Report on AI and the IRS
WASHINGTON, DC—Ways and Means Oversight Subcommittee Ranking Member Terri A. Sewell (D-IL) and Ways and Means Trade Subcommittee Ranking Member Linda T. Sánchez (D-CA) released a new report from the Government Accountability Office (GAO) on artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), and what actions the agency must take to address skills gaps, information quality, and strategic management. This report follows a 2024 request from then-Oversight Subcommittee Ranking Member, the late Bill Pascrell, Jr. (D-NJ).
“The GAO has just confirmed what we’ve always argued: gutting the workforce at the IRS leaves taxpayers worse off and pushes the agency even further into the dark ages. This report lays bare the consequences of Trump’s reckless cuts—fewer audits, weaker enforcement, and an agency less equipped to responsibly deploy AI—and should be required reading for Republicans and the Trump Administration. None of this makes government more efficient, it simply makes it easier to game. By hollowing out the very experts responsible for building and overseeing the tools to modernize the IRS, this Administration has undermined both innovation and accountability. As always, our late colleague, Oversight Subcommittee Chairman Bill Pascrell, was a visionary, who understood the importance of examining AI at the IRS. We thank the GAO for this comprehensive investigation and urge the IRS to act expeditiously on its recommendations.”
