New Report Highlights Long-Term Unemployment’s Harm on Women, Children

June 18, 2014

WASHINGTON – The National Women's Law Center today released a report highlighting long-term unemployment's harmful impact on women and children in the United States. The report shows women's average length of unemployment by age and notes that more than half of unemployed women over the age of 55 have been looking for work for longer than six months. What's more, 2.3 million children last year were living in a household with a parent who had been out of work for longer than six months.

The report's release comes as House Democrats are scheduled to join with join faith, labor, civil rights and nonprofit leaders today at 12:30 p.m. at the House Triangle for the second in a string of "Witness Wednesday" events, where supporters of extending emergency unemployment insurance gather each week to read stories of the long-term unemployed. Today's event focuses on women impacted by the cut-off of emergency unemployment insurance

"Failing to extend emergency unemployment insurance has had incredibly harmful effects on women and families, as this report makes clear," said Ways and Means Committee Ranking Member Sander Levin (D-MI). "Every day the impact grows, with more than three million Americans now cut off unemployment insurance and many more family members harmed as a result."
