Neal Statement on Trump’s Temporary, Desperate Canada Reversal
SPRINGFIELD, MA— Ways and Means Committee Ranking Member Richard E. Neal (D-MA) released the following statement after the Trump Administration announced temporary adjustments to tariffs on Canada:
“After attacking Canada and crushing the American people, I can’t think of a more desperate admission of failed trade policy than temporarily lowering tariffs on select products to favor a political ally 11 days before an election. This stunt only proves further that Trump’s trade strategy is not grounded in anything legitimate, but rather in naked politicization and manufactured chaos.
“Families shouldn’t only get arbitrary relief from the president’s price-hikes because he’s feeling the heat of failure. They need a permanent end to this trade war, not temporary decisions designed to tilt an election — which can be reversed again once it’s over. Americans see this weakness for what it is because they know their financial stability and our global partnerships shouldn’t be cheapened into political bargaining chips.”
