Neal Statement on Trump's Latest Trade Abuse
SPRINGFIELD, MA— Ways and Means Committee Ranking Member Richard E. Neal (D-MA) released the following statement after the Trump Administration began pursuing Section 301 investigations in an attempt to rebuild their price-hiking tariff scheme after their Supreme Court loss on IEEPA:
“It won’t surprise anyone that once again Trump is refusing to accept the reality of his loss and is desperately back at the drawing board trying to find any pretext he can to reclaim power the Supreme Court rightfully said he doesn’t have. Neither the Constitution nor our trade laws give the President the kind of carte blanche authority he seeks to wreak havoc by continuing to raise tariffs or taxes. Hard as he might try none of our trade laws can be stretched that far. Section 301 is predicated on thorough investigations and reporting. Yet again, the Trump Administration thinks it’s above the law, robbing the people of transparency as they find another way to hike prices.
“The people see this for what it is. The President’s commitment to pickpocketing working families, raising costs, and bullying our trading partners is unrelenting, and Democrats will keep fighting it every step of the way.”
