Neal Statement on Trump’s Latest Taxpayer Scam

May 15, 2026

WASHINGTON, DC— Ways and Means Committee Ranking Member Richard E. Neal (D-MA) released the following statement after it was reported that President Trump planned to settle his frivolous lawsuit against the IRS by creating a sham slush fund:

“President Trump might not think about Americans’ financial situation, but it’s obvious that finding new ways to steal from them is always top of mind. His phony lawsuit is a meritless attempt to line his own pockets. Rushing to settle just days before the court deadline probing its validity reeks of looting the taxpayer before the jig is up.

“Families struggling to pay for gas and food shouldn’t be forced to further stretch to pay for Trump’s bogus grievances. While he’ll do whatever it takes to expand his government by and for the grifter, Democrats will keep fighting to stop the scams and ensure taxpayer dollars are rightly used for the people’s needs.”
