Neal Statement on Trump's Latest Price Hikes and Attack on Canada

WASHINGTON, DC— Ways and Means Committee Ranking Member Richard E. Neal (D-MA) released the following statement after President Trump used Section 338 to levy an additional 50% tariff on Canadian goods:

“Trump levying an additional 50 percent tariff on one of our closest allies and largest trading partners—not because of anything they did—but because of catastrophic wildfires is beyond the pale, even for him. While he scrambles on legitimizing his rationale, it keeps changing because it’s all pretext. That’s not coherent trade policy. Enough with the higher costs for the people, driven by grievance and retaliation.

“If there were ever a proof point that this president doesn’t need more tariff authority, it’s this.”
