Neal Statement on One-Year Anniversary of Trump’s Liberation Day
SPRINGFIELD, MA—Ways and Means Committee Ranking Member Richard E. Neal (D-MA) released the following statement ahead of the one-year anniversary of Trump’s “Liberation Day”:
“One year after the President’s so-called ‘Liberation Day,’ and the only thing people have been liberated from is their hard-earned money. From the outset, Democrats warned his illegal tariff scheme would drive up costs, stall growth, and weaken the job market. Twelve months later, families are living that reality every day—and paying for it at every turn.
“Families have suffered needlessly under the false pretenses of his trade war. They were promised an economic renaissance that never materialized. Instead, since April 2025, the economy has been on a losing streak, with fewer jobs, higher prices, and shuttered factories. Our manufacturing sector alone has lost more than 100,000 jobs. That’s the record, etched in stone, of Trump’s policies. And instead of admitting defeat, he’s doubling down—pushing new trade policies that will only deepen the damage, making a bad situation even worse. By every measure, the President has failed to deliver. He’s bailed out his friends, walked away from our allies, and continues to find new ways to make life unaffordable in America.
“The people feel these broken Republican promises every time they go to the checkout line, look at a medical bill, or fill up their gas tank. They deserve a change. They deserve policies that will lower costs and make life easier and fairer. Democrats are the only ones in Washington fighting to chart that new direction, and we aren’t giving up until a brighter, more affordable tomorrow is within reach for our workers and families.”
