Neal Statement on the 91st Anniversary of Social Security

August 14, 2026

SPRINGFIELD, MA—Ways and Means Committee Ranking Member Richard E. Neal (D-MA) released the following statement celebrating the 91st anniversary of President Franklin D. Roosevelt signing the Social Security Act into law:

“Social Security is an enduring promise that after a lifetime of work, every American can retire with dignity, security, and peace of mind. For 91 years, it has served as a pillar of economic security that has uplifted countless workers and families in times of new beginnings, uncertainty, and loss.

“Republicans continue to threaten that promise with their repeated attempts to dismantle and privatize the system. Trump has hollowed out the Social Security Administration by slashing thousands of staff and putting people’s most sensitive data at risk, creating new challenges for seniors, people with disabilities, and survivors to access their Social Security benefits.

“Our fight to beat back the Republican sabotage is unwavering, as is our commitment to ensuring Social Security is stronger 91 years from now than it is today, because a promise earned over a lifetime of work must be a promise kept.”
