Neal Statement on the 61st Anniversary of Medicare and Medicaid
SPRINGFIELD, MA—Ways and Means Committee Ranking Member Richard E. Neal (D-MA) released the following statement marking the 61st anniversary of President Lyndon B. Johnson signing Medicare and Medicaid into law:
“We celebrate 61 years of Medicare and Medicaid as Americans experience the ever-growing fallout of Republicans’ greatest theft of health care in history. Just this week, Trump announced his intention to take Medicare backward by hiking prescription drug plan premiums for seniors. At the same time, the consequences of Republicans’ cuts to Medicaid are being felt nationwide, with hospitals teetering on the verge of shutting their doors and workers and families paying more for even less care—and many losing care altogether.
“Medicare and Medicaid reflect our belief that all are deserving of dignity and security when they need it most. That’s just as important today as it was 61 years ago. Democrats will continue fighting to protect and strengthen these programs, lower costs, expand access to care, and ensure Medicare and Medicaid deliver on their promise for generations to come.”
