Neal Blasts Senate Vote to Hand Trump More Tariff Power

SPRINGFIELD, MA—Ways and Means Committee Ranking Member Richard E. Neal (D-MA) released the following statement after the Senate passed legislation to further embolden Trump’s tariff regime and hand him even more power to raise costs on the American people:

“There is no untangling last month’s jobs losses and the absolute self-own Trump’s tariffs have become. I’ll say it plainly: Americans are losing their jobs because of his tariffs, and those who have kept theirs are stretched because his tariffs continue to hike costs. How can you look at that reality and decide now is the time to give this lawless president more tariff authority? Even the Supreme Court has agreed that he’s gone too far.             

“The Senate just moved toward handing Trump even more power, but this will not stand in the House. There are reasonable ways to support Ukraine and hold Russia accountable while also honoring the legacy of a dear colleague, but emboldening Trump is not only unnecessary, it’s counter to our shared goals."
