Levin Statement on Republican Debt Ceiling Proposal

January 18, 2013

WASHINGTON – Ways and Means Committee Ranking Member Sander Levin (D-MI) today made the following statement regarding the House Republican debt ceiling proposal:

"The Republican proposal for a three-month increase in the debt ceiling does not resolve continuing uncertainty about whether the U.S. will pay its bills. The American economy should not be used as a negotiating tactic for the unbalanced demands of Republicans. Passage of totally unbalanced, partisan and punitive legislation by House Republicans will only add to precarious uncertainty. The President has made clear that in addition to the $2.5 trillion in deficit reduction already achieved, all further steps must maintain a real balance of program cuts and revenues, including taxes."
