Out of This World: GOP Votes to Add $1 Trillion to the Deficit
Well, it's official: House Republicans have now approved more than $1 trillion in unpaid for tax breaks this year alone in the Ways and Means Committee, irresponsibly adding to our nation's deficit at a time when Americans can least afford it. Now that's a big number. In fact, stacking a trillion $1 bills on top of each other would reach a quarter of the way to the moon – really.
The GOP has been unable to find the money needed to fix our crumbling roads and bridges, yet they give large corporations a $1 trillion break. They're threatening to shut down the government and default on our debt, all while rolling out a steady stream of bills that will add to that debt. Meanwhile, tax breaks that would benefit hardworking American families – like the New Markets Tax Credit, the Child Tax Credit, and the Earned Income Tax Credit – are nowhere to be seen. At the end, it's illogical. It's irresponsible.
This is the same disastrous path that Republicans pursued under President Bush that ended with the worst recession since the Great Depression. Remember the claims about tax cuts at the top paying for themselves and creating economic growth? It's déjà voodoo all over again.
