Neal Blasts Trump’s Self-Dealing, $1.8 Billion Taxpayer Shakedown

May 18, 2026

SPRINGFIELD, MA— Ways and Means Committee Ranking Member Richard E. Neal (D-MA) released the following statement after President Trump settled his sham lawsuit against his own government with a $1.8 billion taxpayer-funded slush fund for his friends and January 6 criminals:

“We already knew this to be the most corrupt and self-dealing Administration ever to be seen, but today’s outrageous settlement seals it. Using taxpayer dollars as a piggybank to line the pockets of criminals and cronies close to the President is as brazen as it gets. To make matters worse, the government is walking away from any responsibility to protect the fund from fraud or ensure it won’t be used to commit more crimes, proving again the Trump Administration doesn’t care to be good stewards of the people’s money and will allow their friends to loot without accountability.

“This lawsuit was always phony and this slush fund is no different. The President put himself on both sides of a case, sued the wrong party, was up against the clock in court, and used a backroom deal to get out. Democrats won’t rest until this abuse is put to a stop and taxpayers are provided full disclosure of this fraud and the depth of corruption at play.”
